Marshall woman Jean Birmingham given ETBU service award

Retired Marshall ISD school teacher Jean Birmingham received the Sam B. Hall Civic Service Award from East Texas Baptist University during the annual Sam B. Hall dinner and lecture series.

Birmingham served as a business teacher at Marshall ISD for 36 years and was also active in the city of Marshall as an entrepreneur and city activist.

Birmingham was presented the award on Tuesday at the university by former Harrison County Judge Richard Anderson.

Off the field experience pushing Hollingshead, ETBU Tigers

ETBU's Kaitlyn Hollingshead has spent a lot of time on the softball field where many memories stand out, like as a freshman, when her team won on back-to-back walk off homers in Super Regionals or last year when she hit two home runs against UT-Dallas.

However, her favorite memory on the softball field occurred when she and her Tiger teammates were on a mission trip in Costa Rica and has less to do with the game itself.

A look at Marshall firefighters training

Most people have heard the old saying about how you can't understand what others go through until you've walked a mile in their shoes and I've always felt that was a pretty accurate sentiment.

Much to my chagrin, I wasn't even able to crawl a few feet in the shoes of Marshall firefighters this week, much less make it anywhere close to a mile in them.

ETBU Debate wins 2 championships at LSU

East Texas Baptist University's Debate Team participated at the 2017 Louisiana State University Mardi Gras Swing Debate Tournament in Baton Rouge, Louisiana February 3-4. Two ETBU team members won championships at the competition.
 
ETBU senior Tele'Ma Blackman and junior Harleigh Parrish both competed in the Junior Varsity Division for ETBU. Blackman won the JV Tournament Championship and Parrish won the JV Speaking Championship.
