East Texas Baptist University hosted its 14th annual Great East Texas Hymn Sing on Friday, September 20, at Baker Chapel in the Rogers Spiritual Life Center. The event brought together hundreds of participants, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and churches from across East Texas and neighboring states, for an afternoon of worship, fellowship, and a shared celebration of Christian faith.
“We rejoice in the opportunity to join together for this special time of singing praises to God through the precious hymns of the faith,” President J. Blair Blackburn said. “Gathering together each fall for the Great East Texas Hymn Sing is a beautiful picture of God’s unity of believers, sharing faith and strengthening one another for our good and His glory.”
Hymn Sing, a beloved tradition since its inception in 2010, highlights the rich heritage of hymnody and serves as a special opportunity for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to come together in a spirit of unity and praise. Several ETBU alumni, faculty, and staff led portions of the worship service, including David Berryhill (’94) and Sara Burt (’03). The event was accompanied by beautiful piano and organ performances by University Organist Cathey DeRousse and Assistant Professor of Music Jonathan Kaan (’04). The ETBU Hilltop Singers, led by Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music Dr. Pat Antinone, also contributed to the celebration.
“The Great East Texas Hymn Sing is a powerful reminder of the legacy of faith we share,” Vice President for Advancement and Administrative Affairs Scott Bryant said. “It is always inspiring to witness the harmony of voices lifted in worship and to see generations united in praising God through the timeless hymns of our faith.”
