Tiger Band,
It is the middle of the summer, but it is time to start thinking about band camp! Many of you have made contact with me, and I have enjoyed getting to know most of you through meetings in person, email and facebook. Below are some details that might be helpful as you pack and get ready for move-ins and rehearsals.
Moving In- Your move-in day is Wednesday August 8, 10am-noon, for percussion and colorguard; Thursday August 9, 10am-noon, for band leadership and work crews; and Friday August 10, 10am-noon, for all other enrolled band students. You may go directly to your dorms and unload your stuff. You will need to go by Student Services to pick up your temporary meal card (and permanent ID card.) Make sure you are “clear” with the Business Office!
Meals- ETBU will provide your meals until school starts. Your temporary card will be swiped for meals until Thursday morning, August 16, at which time the temporary cards will be invalid, and you will start using your permanent ID card.
Instruments- ETBU provides all percussion equipment, large brasses and woodwinds, and other “small” instruments as needed. You may check out an instrument for the semester on Friday afternoon before our first meeting. You should plan to bring your own reeds, oil, grease, and any other supplies you may need. Mouthpieces are generally supplied with school-owned instruments.
Music- You will be issued a folder of music at our organizational meeting on Friday evening. We will supply a flip folder. If you wish to have a lyre for your instrument, you will need to purchase one at the local music store.
Uniforms- You will be fitted for uniforms on Friday afternoon after you have checked into the dorms. The uniform will be issued to you clean and in good condition. If alterations are required, the University will pay for them. I will provide you with an ETBU Band shirt to wear under your uniform and a ball cap to wear in the stands at games. To ensure a uniform look, we only allow the “company” shirt and hat to be worn at games. You will provide a pair of soccer or wind shorts to wear under your band pants.
NEW FOR 2012!!! Dr. Oliver has purchased us a set of dri-fit polo shirts with the ETBU Centennial logo embroidered on it. We will wear this shirt for the first two games and other functions, such as pep rallies. You will need to purchase a pair of flat-front Dickie’s work shorts in Khaki (about $20 at Wal-Mart.) They are also widely available on the web. For our “casual” uniform, you will also need a pair of mostly-white athletic shoes. They don’t have to be solid white like Keds or K-Swiss (although those are certainly OK!), just more white than another color!
Uniform Shoes- The Tiger Band uses a matte (non-shiny) black marching shoe with our field uniforms. If you have shoes from a previous year, they may be used. If you have a marching shoe of that type from high school, you may use it. Otherwise you will need to purchase a pair before you get here. Our first uniformed performance is Saturday, October 6, so you have a little while to get them in. There are several good websites you can order from, including www.bandshoppe.com and www.Mccormicksnet.com. Any matte black shoe will be fine. The more expensive shoes are, of course, more comfortable and tend to last longer.
Rehearsals- We will be working both inside and outside during camp. We will work as a full band and in sectionals with student and staff leaders. T-shirts, shorts, and athletic shoes (NO FLIP-FLOPS!!!!!) are the order of the day for marching rehearsals. Please be modest in your dress outside. I would like you to wear a hat and sunglasses when we are rehearsing outside. You might bring a sweater or hoodie if you tend to get cold in the Band Hall.
Schedule- My favorite band camp quote… “Blessed are the flexible, for they will not get bent out of shape!” We will adhere to the printed schedule as closely as possible, but be prepared to make adjustments. All Freshmen will attend orientation (S.M.A.S.H.) activities beginning Thursday afternoon August 16. There are still some opportunities for the Freshmen to join us in rehearsal on Thursday and Friday. We will not have rehearsal on Saturday the 18th, but we will perform at Tiger Fever on the first day of classes after band.
I’m sure you will still have questions, and you are welcome to email or call right up until you get here. Below is a (very) tentative schedule for band camp. Look for updates over the next few weeks!
