Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

At the age of 18, or whenever a student enrolls in an institution of higher learning, students are guaranteed the following:
The right to control who can access records;
The right to inspect and review education records; and
The right to seek to amend records if in error.
ETBU has designated certain information as public information which can be released without student permission. This public or "Directory Information" is limited to the following items. (Please note that our practice is to review requests for even directory information and limit access on a need to know basis.)
| *Name | *Participation in university sports and activities |
| *Address | *Weight and height of athletic team members |
| *Telephone number | *Dates of attendance |
| *E-mail address | *Degrees and awards received |
| *Date and place of birth | *Previous educational institutions attended |
| *Major field of study |
*ALL other information about a student is considered private and is protected by FERPA
Students wishing to allow parents or spouses to obtain information other than Directory Information must have a signed Third-Party Release Form on file. The form is available in the Registrar's Office, from the FORMS navigation on the right, or here: FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT OF 1974 (FERPA)
A Request to Block Directory Information is also available in the Office of the Registrar for students who wish no information released. Further information and clarification can be obtained by contacting the Registrar.
University employees who need to access a student's record in order to do their jobs may do so without consent, according to FERPA.
