ETBU Debate Wins 3rd Place
MARSHALL, Texas (10/07/13) - The East Texas Baptist University debate team travelled to the University of Arkansas at Monticello October 4-6 for the 2013 Weevil Wars debate tournament. Eleven different universities from four different states competed at the event. ETBU came away with the 3rd place sweepstakes trophy, finishing only behind LSU Shreveport and Union University. This was ETBU’s second top three finish in as many tournaments this season.
The squad again bested teams from much larger universities including Arkansas Tech University, Henderson State University, the University of Central Arkansas, and Louisiana Tech University.
Many individual debaters advanced to the individual elimination rounds of debate and were successful. Five of the team’s eight competitors advanced to the round of the top 16 in their respective divisions. Junior Kenny Adcock of Joshua, freshman Katelynn "Ro” Burns of Pittsburg, and freshman Charles Quigley of Houston advanced in the Novice division while sophomore Dakota Hiltzman of Gladewater and senior Ryan Stokes of Nacogdoches advanced in the Varsity division. Adcock also was ranked as the fourth place overall speaker in the Novice Division.
While Adcock, Quigley and Hiltzman lost in the sweet 16 round, Burns and Stokes advanced through to the quarterfinals of their respective divisions before being eliminated from competition. Other ETBU debaters that did not advance beyond the preliminary rounds were junior Payton Beggs of Wichita Falls, coach Cole Franklin, and junior Brandon Henry of Prosper.
"We were very happy with this finish” said Franklin, a Professional division competitor and coach of the ETBU squad. "We had a smaller team than we normally have competing at this tournament, but we were still able to finish strong and come away with a third place finish. We feel like we are on track to have a successful season.”
This was the ETBU debate team’s second tournament of the year. The team will next compete at the LSU-Shreveport Red River swing tournament November 8-9. The team will also host the second annual ETBU Tiger Invitational debate tournament November 15-16.
