MARSHALL NEWS MESSENGER (9/18/13) - About 40 East Texas Baptist University students are planning to make a trip to New York later this semester for opportunities to learn and perform. A public dinner is planned this Friday to help fund the trip.
Residents are invited to make reservations with ETBU’s School of Fine Arts to enjoy a meal and entertainment courtesy of the school’s students.
"It’s going to be a fine, full course meal,” said Dr. Thomas Webster, Dean of ETBU’s School of Fine Arts. "The price of the meal is paid for in the ticket. There will be entertainment as well. The students going on the trip will be serving the guests and will be providing entertainment. Most of the entertainment will be Broadway related such as song and dance.”
All ticket sales will be contributed to the upcoming trip in mid-November. Once in New York, ETBU choir students are to perform in an ensemble with other university students from around the nation at Carnegie Hall.
"This is a special event,” Webster said. "Our concert choir has been asked to sing with other universities in a performance of Morton Lauriden’s ‘Lux Aeterna’ at Carnegie Hall.”
According to ETBU Director of Choral Activities Dr. Justin Hodges, the choir will perform Nov. 17. Prior to the trip, ETBU’s concert choir will perform Nov. 9 at First United Methodist Church in Longview at 7:30 p.m.
In addition to the 30 concert choir students who plan to make the long trip up north, 10 of ETBU’s theater students also plan to tag along for the trip’s educational value. Over the four-day trip, students are planningto visit a number of sites around New York, such as the 9/11 Memorial and view performances on Broadway, where theater students will sharpen their analytical and critique skills. The group may also visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
"Our theater students will also be going as part of the educational experience,” Webster said. "They will be viewing several performances on Broadway.”
