Weekend Tiger Athletics: ETBU Makes it a Clean Sweep at UTT Invitationalby Adam Ledyard
VOLLEYBALL: TYLER, Texas (9/7/13) – Sweeping through the Texas-Tyler Invitational on day two, East Texas Baptist University finished 4-0 with wins over Rhodes College and Centenary College. ETBU is now 5-3 on the year.
In the first match of the day ETBU defeated Rhodes College, 3-1, 22-25, 25-13, 25-20, 25-20, for their fourth win of the year. Kolby Sharp finished with 19 kills while Kassie Freitag had 14 kills. Adaeze Elonu posted 13 kills and four blocks. Hannah Jones added 12 digs while Kayla Taylor had 28 assists and Nicole Buzzard 20 assists.
ETBU finished the day with a sweep over Centenary College, 25-16, 25-15, 25-6, improving to 5-3 overall. Freitag added seven kills while Sharp had five kills while Taylor added 10 assists.
ETBU will travel to Memphis, Tenn., next weekend to play in the Rhodes College Invitational with four more matches.
ETBU Moves to .500 Sweeping through Day 1 at UT-Tyler
VOLLEYBALL: TYLER, Texas (9/6/13) – Evening their record up at 3-3 on the young season, East Texas Baptist University went 2-0 on the first day of the UT-Tyler Invitational. ETBU swept matches over Belhaven University and Jarvis Christian.
ETBU opened the day with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-11 win over Belhaven University to improve to 2-3 overall. Kassie Freitag finished with 12 kills and four block assists while Kolby Sharp added 11 kills and five block assists. Adaeze Elonu gave ETBU five kills and five block assists and Kayla Taylor posted 15 assists while Nicole Buzzard had 13 assists.
In match two of the day, ETBU shut out Jarvis Christian, 25-14, 25-14, 25-8 to move to 3-3. Sharp gave ETBU 11 kills and two block assists while Elonu had five kills. Taylor led the team with 14 assists.
ETBU will face NCAA Division III programs Rhodes University and Centenary College on Saturday in the last day of the invitational.
ETBU Lands in 4th at UT-Tyler Invite
CROSS COUNTRY: (M): TYLER, Texas (9/6/13) – Placing three runners in the top 30 at the University of Texas-Tyler Invitational, East Texas Baptist University finished with 132 points for a fourth place finish out of eight programs. ETBU was just 30 points off from being in the top three.
ETBU finished ahead of LeTourneau, Texas-Dallas, Jarvis Christian, and Centenary College. Texas-Tyler won the meet with 30 points while Southern Arkansas came in second with 33 points.
Landon Price led the team for the second week in a row with a 15th place finish in the 5K run. He posted a time of 17:03 just 22 seconds off of being in the top 10. Ian Spencer was the second runner in the top 30 coming in 26th place (18:31) while Seth Powers finished in 28th (18:59). Aaron Durham followed in 31st (19:13) as Jake Perkins was 32nd (19:14). Nick Larzabal finished in 38th (19:31) and Jordan Tarbutton came in 53rd (23:11).
ETBU will next run on September 21st in Abilene, Texas, at the Hardin-Simmons University Invitational.
Women Finish 8th at UT-Tyler Meet
CROSSCOUNTRY (W): TYLER, Texas (9/6/13) – Running against 10 programs at the University of Texas-Tyler, the East Texas Baptist University women’s cross country team finished eighth overall. ETBU finished with 201 points and ahead of Jarvis Christian and Wiley College.
Shelby Taylor was the top runner finishing in 30th place in the 5K run with a time of 23:32 as ETBU’s top runner. Megan Merrill followed in 32nd place with a time of 23:39. Finishing 38th was Shelby Sparks with a time of 24:44 while Leslie Martinez was 50th (26:43) and Madison Kauffman came in 51st (26:54).
ETBU will next run on September 21st in Abilene, Texas, at the Hardin-Simmons Invitational.
