Windham, Bates Earn All-Region Awardsby Adam Ledyard
BASEBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (6/20/13) – Adding more awards to a year that featured East Texas Baptist University’s first post-season appearance since 2005, both Phillip Windham and Tyler Bates have received all-region awards. Windham earned two awards for his play from D3Baseball.com and the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association).
Windham was voted onto the ABCA All-West Region first-team as a designated hitter and was a D3Baseball.com second-team selection. He finished the year third in the nation in home runs with 12 just two behind Huntingdon’s Joseph Odom. For most of the 2013 season Windham led the NCAA Division III in home runs. He led the team in RBI with 41 posting a .311 batting average and five doubles with a .615 slugging percentage. He started and played in 40 games and led the American Southwest Conference in home runs was second in slugging percentage, third in RBI, fourth in runs scored (83), and seventh in walks (24). Windham was an All-ASC East first-team selection in May.
Bates was named to the ABCA All-West third-team for his play earning his third award of the year. He also was an ASC East first-team member along with being the ASC East’s "Freshman of the Year.” He finished batting third on the team with a .329 average starting and playing in all 42 games. He led the team in steals (10), hits (52), at-bats (158), and doubles (14). He produced 25 RBI, three home runs, and two triples with a .500 slugging percentage. He finished second in the ASC in doubles and was seventh in total bases (79).
ETBU finished 19-23 and participated in their first ASC Tournament since 2005. They finished sixth in NCAA Division III in home runs (31) after leading the nation for the majority of the season. They were also seventh in home runs per game (.74).
