ETBU Secures ASC Tournament Spot in Win Over UTD, 6-3
BASEBALL: RICHARDSON, Texas (4/19/13) – Late inning rallies lead East Texas Baptist University to a 6-3 win over the University Texas-Dallas as they secured their spot in the 2013 American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time in eight years. ETBU took the lead in the eighth inning with four runs, 6-2, breaking open a 2-2 tie and then held off the Comets for their 19th win of the year.
Matt Lefler went 7.1 innings for his fourth win of the year with four strikeouts giving up three earned runs. Kirby Moore came in and finished off Texas-Dallas in the final 1.2 innings picking up his third save of the year. Jon Burkhart had three hits for one RBI while Ben Beltran posted two hits for two RBI. Matty Sullivan and Jeremy Pinder both added a RBI.
Texas-Dallas took the early 2-0 lead in the third inning and then kept ETBU scoreless until the sixth inning. In the sixth inning Burkhart doubled to left field brining in Tyler Bates who started the inning with a double. ETBU then tied the game at two in the seventh inning on Beltran’s two out single through the right side that scored Pinder.
For the third inning in a row, ETBU scored putting four runs up in the eighth to take the lead, 6-2. Matty Sullivan, with one out, doubled to right center field as Burkhart made his way home from first base. Two batters later, Pinder singled in Sullivan for the fourth run of the game and then Garrett Parsons came in on the same play on a throwing error from the outfield for the 5-2 lead. Beltran followed with his second hit of the game through the right side as Pinder was the sixth run of the game.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Moore came in with one out and the bases loaded. The first batter grounded out as one run came in. The next batter then flew out to Pinder in right field to end the threat. In the ninth, Moore struck out the first batter and then gave up a single. A second fly out to Bates in centerfield and a fielder’s choice by Lance Anding ended the game as ETBU secured their spot in the ASC Tournament.
ETBU will face Texas-Dallas tomorrow in a double header starting at 12:00 p.m.
ETBU Sweeps LeTourneau; Swaner Plays Last Home Series
SOFTBALL: MARSHALL, Texas (4/20/13) – Finishing out the 2013 regular season with a strong series sweep of LeTourneau University, #14 East Texas Baptist University won their 29th and 30th games of the year, 8-2, and 8-0. It was a day to remember for military families in the inaugural Military Game and also was senior day for Lya Swaner.
Moving their American Southwest Conference East record to 18-6, ETBU is the #2 seed in the upcoming tournament on the East side. This marks the 13thstraight year that ETBU has made the ASC Tournament.
Lacy Liles and Kelsey DeCarolis each had four hits for ETBU as Tawny Hank added three hits and four RBI. Both Shelby Parker and Kelly Jo McLendon received the wins.
ETBU 8, LeTourneau 2
After LeTourneau took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a home run, ETBU took the lead for good, 2-1, with two runs in the third inning and then four in the fourth inning to secure a five-run lead, 6-1. LeTourneau cut the lead to four in the sixth only to let ETBU score two more in the bottom of the inning for the 8-2 win.
Liles went 3-of-4 with one RBI and Hank was 2-of-3 with three RBI. DeCarolis added two hits for two RBI as Maranda Westbrook also had two hits. Parker went seven innings for the win striking out eight batters and moving up to 107 strikeouts on the year.
After the home run in the second inning, DeCarolis singled to right field with the bases loaded as both Liles and Kayla Garcia scored to put ETBU ahead, 2-1. In the fourth inning, ETBU moved ahead 6-1 with four runs coming in all with two outs.
Westbrook was the first of four runs to score making her way in from second base on a LeTourneau throwing error. Liles followed with a single up the middle as Garcia found home plate after moving to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Hank doubled to left center field bringing in Sara Clements and Liles as the third and fourth runs of the inning.
LeTourneau added one run in the sixth but then gave up two more in the bottom of the inning. Hank singled up the middle with one out as Liles scored again in the game for the first run of the sixth. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Logan Gardner walked for the eighth run of the game as Jordan Bullard trotted in.
ETBU 8, LeTourneau 0
After a scoreless first inning, ETBU put the game in their favor with a five-run second inning. They then added two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth for the 8-0 lead. McLendon only allowed three hits for her seventh win of the year not giving up any runs.
Alyssa Romero, Clements, DeCarolis, and Swaner all had two hits in the game. Romero and Clements added two RBI and Liles and Hank each had one RBI. Kaylee Pritchett took the loss for LeTourneau.
With two outs in the fifth inning, ETBU brought in five runs for the big lead. Hank started the two-out rally with her fourth home run of the year lifting a shot over the left field fence. Two straight singles and a walk loaded the bases for Romero as she singled to right center scoring two runs. Two batters later, Romero and Gardner both came in on a throwing error for the fourth and fifth runs of the inning.
In the fourth inning, Liles and Clements had back-to-back extra base hits that brought in both runs. Liles tripled down the right field line as Romero came in and then Clements doubled in Liles for the 7-0 lead.
Clements had the walkoff single in the sixth inning to end the game at 8-0 as she poked a shot down the left field line as Amanda Fiveash came in.
ETBU will now wait to see who they play next week in the ASC Tournament in Farmers Branch, Texas.
ETBU's Bats Dry Up in Final Series vs. UTD
BASEBALL: RICHARDSON, Texas (4/20/13) – The high potent hitting offense of East Texas Baptist University was shut down in the final two regular season games as the University of Texas-Dallas took the overall series winning, 6-1, and 4-2. ETBU does secure a spot in the American Southwest Conference Tournament as the #4 seed after winning the opening game on Friday night.
ETBU’s 9-9 ASC East record is the first .500 or above record since 2005 when the team last made the ASC Tournament at 14-7. The 19 wins are the most since the 23 wins in 2006.
Matty Sullivan had the hot bat picking up three of eight ETBU hits and bringing in two of the three runs. T.J. Barnes and Kirby Moore received the losses for ETBU.
Texas-Dallas 6, ETBU 1
With the game tied at one, Texas-Dallas had a five-run inning in the fifth as they scored enough runs to take the seven inning game, 6-1. ETBU had only three hits on the day as Texas-Dallas’s Campbell struck out seven batters.
Texas-Dallas took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then ETBU tied it in the top of the third. Lance Anding came in on Sullivan’s singled to center field to tie the game. After a scoreless inning, Texas-Dallas broke open the game with five runs in the fifth inning.
Sullivan, Jeremy Pinder, and Anding were the only players to have a hit in the game. Barnes started the game and went three innings but gave up five earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Jimmy Russo pitched one inning with one strikeout and one earned run while Tanner Matthews finished the final two innings and recorded one strikeout.
Texas-Dallas 4, ETBU 2
Pulling out the win in the bottom of the eighth inning, Texas-Dallas squeaked away the win to secure the #3 spot in the ASC Tournament on the East side. ETBU struck first with a run in the first but Texas-Dallas tied the game at one in the fourth inning. ETBU answered with a run in the fifth but left the bases loaded for the 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Texas-Dallas tied the game at two and then had two runs come in off of two errors in the eighth inning for the 4-2 win.
Jon Burkhart and Sullivan each had two hits in the game while Sullivan and Pinder posted one RBI each. Kirby Moore received the loss pitching the final 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Zack Tampke started the game and went 6.2 innings for the no decision as only one earned run came in.
In the first inning, Pinder singled to right field as Burkhart came in for the 1-0 lead. The lead lasted until the fourth inning when Texas-Dallas tied the game. Sullivan singled up the middle in the fifth inning as Jordan Brewer scored for the 2-1 lead. The lead held until the seventh inning when Texas-Dallas tied the game at two before scoring two in the eighth inning for the final lead.
ETBU will advance to the ASC Tournament and play in the first round against #1 seed Texas Lutheran University from the ASC West next weekend.
#12 UTT Shuts Out ETBU in Last Match of 2013
TENNIS (M): TYLER, Texas (4/19/13) – Finishing the 2013 spring season against #12 the University of Texas-Tyler, ETBU lost, 9-0. ETBU finishes the year at 3-15 and 1-5 in the ASC East.
ETBU came out of doubles play down 3-0 after Texas-Tyler won 8-2 in #1 doubles and then 8-1 in both the #2 and #3 doubles matches.
Luke Phillips, who played in his final match for ETBU, was close to a point at #5 singles but fell to Jacob Van Der Schans, 7-5, 6-2. Tyler Tolopka lost the #1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, to Doug Kierstead.
ETBU loses just Phillips for the 2014 season.
ETBU Finishes Out 2013 Dropping Match to UTT
TENNIS (W): TYLER, Texas (4/19/13) – The 2013 women’s tennis season for East Texas Baptist University came to a close in Tyler, Texas, with a 9-0 loss to the University of Texas-Tyler. ETBU finishes their second year of the new program at 1-16.
Texas-Tyler started off with a 3-0 lead taking #1 doubles, 8-2, over Kali Kipp and Kallie Kent and then shutting out ETBU, 8-0, in #2 and #3 doubles.
Kent pushed for a point in #1 singles but fell short, 6-2, 6-4, to Amy Friesenhahn and then Hannah Word fell 6-1, 6-1, to Jessica Blundell in #2 singles. Kipp played at #4 singles and fell, 6-3, 6-0, to Nicole Musngi.
ETBU loses just one player in Kallie Kent as she graduates.
