Weekend Tiger Basketball

BASKETBALL (W): KERRVILLE, Texas (12/1/12) – Mary Slaughter produced her 22nd career double-double and first of the season pushing East Texas Baptist University over Schreiner University, 63-51. Slaughter grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 13 points as ETBU improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
April Leonard led ETBU with 15 points and had three steals. Jaimie Kadlecek finished with four assists to lead the team. Schreiner’s Katie Isom had 12 points as the only double-digit scorer.
Schreiner built a five-point lead, 12-7, in the first eight minutes of the game before ETBU’s offense kicked in. At the 11:20 mark, Schreiner’s Isom banked in a jumper to make it 14-9. In the next six minutes, they would only score two points as ETBU put together a 13-2 run taking a six-point lead, 22-16. Kadlecek started the run with a jumper and then Amanda Rucker hit a fist-pumping three-point shot to tie the game at 14. Holly Phelps gave ETBU the lead for good, 16-14, on a turn-around jumper and on the next possession Rucker sailed in a shot for a four-point lead. After Schreiner cut the lead to two, Morgan Eddleman sank her first of two three-pointers pushing the lead to five, 21-16. Leonard finished off the run making 1-of-2 from the stripe for the six-point advantage, 22-16. Schreiner would hang around cutting the lead to four twice but Bradace Latin gave ETBU their biggest lead in the first half of eighth points, 30-22, with 2:18 left. The last bucket of the half was made with 1:47 left by Schreiner as the halftime score was 30-24.
Just under two minutes into the second half, ETBU extended the lead to 11, 37-26, on a Slaughter jumper under the hoop. Schreiner fought back to cut the lead to six at the 16:19 mark, 37-31, as that is as close as they would come the rest of the game. ETBU went on an 18-6 run over eight and half minutes taking their largest lead of the game of 17 points, 54-37. Eddleman finished the run with a three-pointer for the biggest lead. Slaughter started the run with two straight free throws and Leonard scored eight of the 18 points with one bucket and two back-to-back three-pointers. Paigen Gilford also had a bucket in the run. Schreiner did cut the lead to nine but came no closer as ETBU closed out the game out scoring the Mountaineers, 5-2, for the win.
ETBU forced 17 turnovers and had 11 steals. They finished shooting 39% from the floor, 31% from the arc, and 64% from the stripe. Schreiner shot on 30% from the floor, only 14% from the three-point line, and 55% from the foul line. ETBU also out rebounded Schreiner, 49-33.
ETBU will host Hardin-Simmons on Thursday, December 6th, at 5:30 p.m. in their third ASC game of the year.
ETBU's Last Minute Hopes of Win Slip Away
BASKETBALL (M) KERRVILLE, Texas (12/1/12) –The final minute of the game has not been good for East Texas Baptist University in three of the last four games as they fell to Schreiner University, 70-66, in American Southwest Conference play. Jaron Joseph tied the game at 64 with 1:16 left but Schreiner would go 6-of-8 from the foul line the rest of the way. ETBU had a chance to take the lead with 33 seconds left but the shot didn’t fall as Schreiner grabbed the rebound shooting six free throws in the last 30 seconds making five for the four-point win. ETBU is now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the American Southwest Conference.
Joseph led the team with 21 points as Junior Mitchell added 12 points. Chris Collins and Erby Thompson both added nine points and Justin Felicia grabbed six rebounds. Schreiner had four players in double figures as Kyle Oliver had 17 points.
The first half was the best half for ETBU as they moved out to an 11-point lead at the 11:24 mark. J.D. Richardson hit his only shot of the game to make it 17-6 as everything was clicking for the Tigers. After Schreiner opened the game with a three-pointer, ETBU went on a 17-3 run in nine minutes for the lead. Seth Powers hit the first bucket of the game and then C.J. Jones swooshed in two free throws with 16:37 left. At the 12:54 mark, Joseph scored his first of 21 points as ETBU went up by nine, 15-6. After the 11-point lead, Schreiner answered with a 15-2 run to retake the lead, 21-19. The last eight minutes of the half were a battle as there were five ties. Felicia gave ETBU their final bucket with 23 seconds left in the half going into the locker room with a two-point lead, 32-30.
Both teams went at each other the first three minutes of the second half before Schreiner took control of the game. Schreiner tied the game at 32 less than a minute in but Mitchell sailed in a jumper to retake the lead, 34-32, at the 18:47 mark. With 17:35 left, Schreiner hit two free throws to tie the game but Joseph made both of his free throws as ETBU went back in front, 36-34. Once again, Schreiner responded and this time they took the lead for good. Schreiner answered with a 12-2 run for an eight-point lead, 46-38.
ETBU did not back down with a 14-8 run pulling to within one, 54-53, with 8:25 left. At the 6:20 mark, Joseph tied the game 56 only to see Schreiner move back ahead by four, 63-59, with 3:05 left. Joseph once again tied the game at 64 with 1:16 to go but ETBU could not find the go ahead shot as Schreiner took the win.
ETBU had a great night from the line shooting 90% (10-of-11) and made 41% from the floor and 28% from beyond the arc. Schreiner finished shooting 45% from the floor, 53% from three-point range (8-of-15), and 81% from the line. They also out rebounded ETBU, 36-29. Both teams only had 11 turnovers.
ETBU will host Hardin-Simmons on Thursday, December 6th, at 7:30 p.m. in Ornelas Gym.
